Yesterday, Bitcoin.org blocked access to the Bitcoin software download page in the UK. At the time of writing, the reason Bitcoin.org gave was that the site was “undergoing routine maintenance.” Which is funny, because there is nothing wrong with the Bitcoin software download page—that’s exactly what is needed: maintenance, just not while Bitcoin.org is undergoing maintenance.

Bitcoin has been a source of debate in the UK. The Bank of England (BoE) has been called out for not making any clear statements on whether Bitcoin is a legal or illegal currency. At the same time, the government has said it is not going to interfere with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin.org is a website that offers downloads for Bitcoin clients and software. It is operated by Bitcoin Core developers. Bitcoin.org is a non-profit organisation, and anyone can contribute. In July 2017, the website was blocked in the UK. The website hosts software which includes blockchain code, a peer-to-peer network running the bitcoin protocol. It was blocked by UK internet service providers (ISPs) Virgin Media and TalkTalk.

It is no longer possible to download Bitcoin Core software from Bitcoin.org if you are visiting the site with a UK IP address. The announcement on the website reads: This software is currently not available for download in the UK, and the download links will not work if you are in the UK.

If you try to download Bitcoin (BTC) software from a website with an IP address in the UK, you get a 404 error message.

Bitcoin.org’s pseudo-owner, Koebra, who described the reason for blocking access to software downloads for visitors to the site in the UK, responded to the tweet with the following words

The white paper is on the blockchain and can be accessed via software. I am not authorized to distribute the white paper on bitcoin.org or otherwise. We must obey the law.

The document resides on the blockchain and can be accessed through software. I may not distribute the white paper at https://t.co/1dtx7wYjP2 or in any other way. We must obey the law.

As Cointelegraph previously reported, a UK court has ruled in favor of Craig Wright, the self-proclaimed creator of Bitcoin, in a copyright infringement case against Cøbra and Bitcoin.org for publishing a white paper on Bitcoin.

However, the default judgment was entered only because Koebra failed to defend. As part of the judgment, Sebra was also ordered to pay Wright’s litigation costs in the amount of £35,000 (approximately $48,600).

The court ruling is the latest salvo in Wrights attack on those who dispute his claim that he is the creator of bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. In January, Wright demanded that Bitcoin.org, Bitcoin.com and Bitcoincore.org remove copies of the bitcoin white paper from their websites.

Wright continues to claim that the Bitcoin white paper is his intellectual property. Meanwhile, it continues to support Bitcoin SV (BSV), a split chain that evolved from Bitcoin Cash (BCH), which is itself a fork in the Bitcoin chain.

Bitcoin software downloads are still available on Bitcoincore.org, even for visitors with UK IP addresses at the time of writing.

In fact, the geo-fencing of the download link on Bitcoin.org probably won’t affect people who want to launch Bitcoin Core in the country, as there are many workarounds, such as virtual private networks and other sites that host the software. The block chain, the technology that powers Bitcoin and the other cryptocurrencies, is arguably the most important innovation in digital currency since the invention of the Internet. As the world’s most popular digital currency, Bitcoin is the most widely used cryptocurrency, and has been embraced by many of the world’s most influential institutions..
